Abstract Attachment is a pattern of interaction and communication established and developed between mother and her newborn after birth. It is important for the growth of mental and physical health of neonates. The aim of study was to evaluate the effect of pre – cesarean sections(CS) instruction on the post cesarean maternal-newborn attachment behaviors.Aquasi experimental (post-test-only design) was adopted to the current study. A total of 130 post C/S women were recruited and two groups were randomly assigned to study and control, 65women each.A structured Interviewing questionnaire and postpartum maternal newborn attachment behaviors observational tools were utilized to collect data. The current resultsrevealed that, there are highly statistically significant differences between groups were found in relation to maternal attachment behaviors at all three domains. The mean total attachment scoreswere 86.32±23.02 VS. 70.05±26.44 in the study and control groups respectively with a statistical significant difference (p=0.001). The mean of emotional behavior was 47.42±11.99 VS 38.18 ±14.31 in the study and control groups respectively with statistically significant difference (p=0.001). Looking behavior was the most frequent emotional behavior with the statistical significant difference between both groups (p=0.001).Also, the mean of keeping close behavior was 26.77±7.72 VS.21.32±8.46 in the study and control groups respectively with statistically significant difference (p=0.001); sticking newborn to the mother was the most frequent keeping close behavior. The mean of caring behaviors was 12.08±3.97 VS. 10.43±4.48 in the study and control groups respectively with statistical significant difference (p=0.03). While, replace/adjust cover or clothes was the most caring behavior, while unfortunatelywas not statistically significant different between groups (p=0.16). Also, the mean time of initiation of breast feeding was 4.22±2.842 and 6.48±3.713 in the study and in the control groups respectively with statistically significant difference between both groups (p=0.001). The study concluded that, providing mothers with the necessary bonding instructions before undergoing caesarean sectionhad a significant impact on post caesarean sectionmaternal-newborn attachment behaviors. It is recommended that,an educational program for all women undergoing caesarean sectionabout promoting postpartum maternal-newborn attachment behavior should be a part of prenatal care. |
