Abstract

Various therapeutic approaches like topical tretinoin, hydrant creams, different acid peels, microdermabrasion, and skin needling have been proposed for the improvement of striae alba. Other modalities emerged, such as surface radiofrequency which have also been proposed with variable results.
In this study, 58 patients with striae alba who were attending Beni-Suef University hospital were included. Patients in this study were divided according to the treatment received into 2 groups:
• group I: Consists of 29 patients who received radiofrequency microneedling.
• group II: Consists of 29 patients who received microneedling alone.
from the present study, we can sum up the following:
• Patients in group I (radiofrequency microneedling) had significantly higher post-procedural pain as per VAS score after treatment when compared with group II (microneedling alone) (2.22 ± 0.49 vs1.76 ± 0.45; P=0.000).
• There was no significant difference between both study groups regarding percentage of reduction in the width of the largest striae.
• Patients in group I (radiofrequency microneedling) had significantly higher incidence of post-procedural erythema (69.0% vs 24.1%; P=0.001) and pruritis (51.7% vs 6.9%; P=0.001) when compared with patients in group II (microneedling alone).
• There was no significant difference between different locations as regards the percentage of reduction in the width of the largest striae among cases in both study groups.
• There was no significant relation between percentage of reduction in the width of the largest striae and age, Fitzpatrick skin type, duration of the striae, causes of stria or VAS score after treatment in both study groups.
To sum up, radiofrequency microneedling and microneedling are both efficient treatments to resolve stria alba. It is worth mentioning that new light of importance should be shed on microneedling modality as it can be carried out with lower costs and less experienced technicians. Microneedling showed more significant tolerability than radiofrequency microneedling in the treatment of striae alba with no difference in effectiveness.
