Abstract

chitosan can induce the regeneration of chondrocytes, improve type II collagen and proteoglycan production, as well as other extracellular matrix materials, promote cartilage repair and protect cartilage. Objectives: to investigate and compare between the effect of phonophoresis using chitosan and phonophoresis using glucosamine on pain, function and knee ROM on knee OA.Methods: This was an experimental controlled trial. Sixty participants with knee osteoarthritis were selected and randomly assigned into 3 equal groups. group A received chitosan phonophoresis plus traditional physical therapy, group B received glucosamine phonophoresis plus traditional physical therapy and group C received traditional physical therapy treatment in the form of US, TENS, exercise and infrared. All participants received 12 sessions (3 times per week for 4 weeks). Pain level, knee function and knee flexion, extension range of motion were recorded 2 times (pre-treatment and after 4 weeks of treatment). Results: pain level and knee function were improved significantly post-treatment compared with pre-treatment in both groups A and B only, with the greatest improvement in group A. the pain level decreased post-treatment by 79% in group A and 72% In group B. knee function improved by 66.6% in group A and 55.3% in group B. There was significant difference between groups post-treatment in knee function in favor to group A, also there was significant difference in knee pain in favor of group A and B, There was no significant difference in knee flexion and extension range of motion post-treatment between three groups. Conclusion:Both glucosamine and chitosan had effect on knee osteoarthritis, but chitosan phonophoresis had a greater effect in reducing pain and improving knee function in patients with knee osteoarthritis compared with glucosamine phonophoresis.
