Abstract

Worldwide, hundreds of thousands of people have been able to regain hearing through cochlear implants (CIs). Even though the majority of those who qualify for CI will benefit after implantation, it is still challenging to estimate exactly how much a person’s hearing will improve. Several factors have been reported to have an impact on the ability of prelingually deaf children to develop oral language skills after cochlear implantation. The most important and consistently reported variable that influences the ability to use auditory-only communication is the age at which the child is implanted The aim of this study was to assess the preoperative factors affecting the audiological, speech and language outcomes achieved by the recipients of multichannel cochlear implants This study was conducted on 39 pre-lingually deafened children, their ages ranged from (3.8-12) years. All children were fitted with unilateral cochlear implant and all of them were obtained from the Audiovestibular unit (Assiut university hospital) between January 2021 and January 2022. Children of both sexes had been using their implants for periods of 6 months to 9 years. They had received their implants at age ranges between 2 and 5 years. Consent was taken from parents of each subject in this study after describing the test and aim of it to them The study determined the effect of some variables which may play a role on the outcome of hearing & speech perception abilities in these children. These variables were obtained through detailed history which was used as a tool for data collection by personal interviewing parents of the participants.
