Abstract

The pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes involves pro - inflammatory pathways. We determined whether elevated levels of the inflammatory markers interleukin IL - 18and C - reactive protein (CRP) are associated with development of type 2 diabetes mellitus among healthy middle - aged men and women without prior clinical cardiovascular disease or renal disease or hepatic disease. All patients admitted to National Institute of diabetes and endocrinology, Cairo, Egypt. Our population study is consisted of 80 persons were classified into three groups: control group (GI) consisted of 20 clinically healthy adult (10 males and 10 females), Controlled diabetes type 2 (GII) consisted of 34 patients (18 males and 16 females) and uncontrolled diabetes type 2 (GII) consisted of 26 patients (12 males and 14 females). Higher IL - 18 levels were significantly associated with increased risk of developing diabetes (assessed by HbA1c) in diabetic patients compared with healthy subjects at p < 0.001 independent of other inflammatory markers such as CRP. Conclusions/interpretation elevated IL - 18 levels, is associated with an increased risk of future diabetes, and can predict the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus T2DM
