Abstract

The current study aimed to monitoring of the environmental impact resulting from the drainage of some inorganic fertilizers in certain freshwater streams, on physico-chemical properties of water quality. Distribution and population of some freshwater snails was recorded. Chlorophyll-a content was measured to determine the eutrophication level of water. The results revealed that Biomphalaria alexandrina has the most enumeration snail species, where they have the ability to tolerate and adapt to various environmental circumstances. Eichhornia crassipes; Echinochloa sp. (Water grass) and Lemna gibba were the most dominant aquatic plants and almost they were found in all examined sites. The present study deals with three inorganic fertilizers (balanced, high phosphorus and high nitrogen) as their (LC ) values were 50 505.7, 1600 and 9500 ppm, respectively after 24 hours of exposure. The results showed that the harmful effect of these fertilizers on the survival, growth rates and egg laying capacity of exposed B. alexandrina snails. Such effects were supported by the assessment of some antioxidant parameters, estimation of protein content using SDS-PAGE. Also, histopathological examinations in the digestive gland of the infected snails that exposed to sublethal concentration of these fertilizers were done
