Abstract

Electromagnetic fields (EMFs) originating both from natural and man - made sources permeate our environment. Biological effects of EMFs could be physiological, biochemical or behavioural changes induced in an organism, tissue or cell. Melatonin is known as a powerful antioxidant. The present study was performed on 48 adult male albino rats (rattus rattus). They were 10 - 12 weeks of age, weighting 120 - 140g. They were divided into 6 groups (8rats each) after acclimatization for two weeks as the following: group 1: Control unexposed rats. group 2: Normal unexposed rats treated with 200æg melatonin/100g b.wt/three times orally/week for 8 weeks. group 3: Normal unexposed rats treated with 400æg melatonin/ 100g b.wt / three times orally/week for 8 weeks. group 4: Rats exposed to 900MHz electromagnetic field (EMF). group 5: Rats exposed to EMF and treated with 200æg melatonin/100 gb.wt/three times orally / week for 8 weeks. group 6: Rats exposed to EMF and treated with 400æg melatonin/100g b.wt/three times orally/week for 8 weeks. Haematological investigations of the control group, EMF exposed male rats and EMF exposed male rats treated groups with 200 and 400 og melatonin / 100 g.wt showed more highly significant difference in case of RBCs, Hb, Hct, MCV, MCHC, WBCs and platelets count
