Abstract The lifetime probability of a colorectal cancer diagnosis is 4.7% in women and 5.0% in men. Being such a 2relatively3 common tumor, increased researches and multidisciplinary approaches are continuously aiming at decreasing morbidities and mortalities of this disease. With novel methods of early detection, the overall survival improved markedly over the last century with overall 5 year survival rate about 65% and for early stages it may reach up to 90%. Although low anterior resection with primary anastomosis ameliorated the need for colostomy, functional outcomes were not satisfactory especially with improved survival. Loss of reservoir was suggested to be the cause of urgency, incontinence and frequent motions after low anterior resection with straight colo - anal anastomosis. The idea of colonic pouches was coloned from ileal pouch used after total procto-colectomy in ulcerative colitis and familial polyposis coli. The concept was to overcome functional drawbacks of straight colon-anal anastomosis |
