Abstract

Background: Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) in the newborn is a common problem in the neonatal intensive care unit. Many underlying factors may contribute in AKI development such as asphyxia, respiratory distress syndrome, and urogenital anomalies. The aim of this study is to highlight the risk factors of AKI among neonates admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of Cairo University Pediatric Hospital (CUPH). Methods: The study was carried out on 90 neonates, among neonates admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of Cairo University Pediatric Hospital (CUPH). Those 90 neonates were divided into 30 neonates as cases (with AKI) and 60 neonates as controls (without AKI). The study was done through 12 months during the period from January 2014 to January 2015. All neonates were subjected to the following: full history taking, examination, and investigations in the form of complete blood count, C-reactive protein, blood culture, arterial blood gases, serum creatinine on day 3, 7, and 14, blood urea nitrogen, serum sodium, potassium and calcium, urine analysis, and abdominal ultrasonography. Management like interventions and medications given to the patients were recorded
