Abstract

The presented thesis aimed at the discovery of the therapeutic agents derived from Justicia spicigera (Family: Acanthaceae) which can be useful in drug industry. The total saponin content gave concentration of 0.2083582 mg/ g of the dried powder as standard diosgenin. GLC analysis of the cold & hot mucilage hydrolyzate revealed the presence of seven free sugars including , Arabinose, ribose, rhamnose, sorbitol, galactose and glucose. The total phenolic content (TPC) was determined in all the extracts and fractions as gallic acid equivalents (GAE) to give results of 9.13±0.32, 13.63±0.51, 42.94±0.62, 8.76±0.73, 42.39±0.14 expressed as mg/g for petroleum ether fraction, chloroformic fraction, ethyl acetate fraction, butanol fraction, and water extract respectively. Analysis of total amino acids content yielded 0.3% ,16 amino acids were identified, the main of which are, Glutamic acid(40.87 %) , Aspartic acid( 8.35 %), Arginine (7.53 %), phenylalanine (6.23 %), leucine (5.85 % ). The yield of the volatiles is 0.02%. 1-Octen-3-ol, Hexenal 2E , Decenal 2E, are the major constituents of the volatile content of the plant of percentages (62.52%, 10.66%, 9.29%), respectively. GC/MS analysis of the unsaponifiable matters revealed the identification of sixteen compounds, amounting 94.67 %. Identified saponifiable matters represented 53.95 %. Six main compounds assigned as P1-P6 were isolated from the pet ether fraction and turned out to be hentriacontane, tritriacontane, octacosanol, triacontanol, phytol & Ý-sitosterol. The use of HPLC led to the identification of delphinidin chloride in anthocyanin extract and ethyl acetate fraction which recorded a concentration of 12.075 and 2.149 mg/100g, respectively
