Abstract
Cancer represents a major health problem. Efforts to develop new anticancer agents are now directed towards multitarget therapies that are believed to have less side effects and low tendency to resistance compared to conventional drugs. Phthalazine scaffold is an interesting bioactive core eliciting a wide range of biological activities including anticancer, antibacterial, anti - inflammatory, antihypertensive and anticonvulsant activity. Herein, we highlighted on the anticancer activity of the phthalazine nucleus, especially 4-anilinophthalazine derivatives which are reported to possess anticancer activity and many of them in clinical are trials. In this work, five series of phthalazine - based compounds were synthesized. The target compounds featured a variety of bioactive chemical fragments of anticancer potential. Anticancer activity study was performed for all target compounds. This part presents a brief literature review about cancer, its causes and treatment. It also includes a survey on the different biological activities of phthalazine compounds with special emphasis on their anticancer activity. In addition, some of the reported chemical methods used for the synthesis of phthalazine nucleus are illustrated
