Abstract
Upheavals and uprisings in the North Africa and the Middle East region started in 2006, but by the end of 2010 a series of popular uprisings erupted toppling authoritarian regimes that were in power for decades. This phenomenon, known as ”The Arab Spring”, was understood by many scholars as the beginning of a new wave of democratization. However, there are also other experts who are skeptical of the democratic outcomes that might originate from these popular uprisings. One way to address these historical events is through the study of the transitions and democratic consolidation approach that have been conducted to analyze the pathways from authoritarian regimes to democratic ones. Egypt, the study case of this research, is an important actor in the region, and whatever outcome from this transition processes will undoubtedly affect the Arab world as a whole. In this regard, this research aims to analyze the domestic and external context in which the Egyptian case is played out. The domestic context will expose the nature of the authoritarian regime and the circumstances that lead to its collapse.
