Abstract

This study was done to investigate the relationship between body mass index and postural balance in post-menopausal women. Sixty post- menopausal women (5 years after last menstruation) with different body weight participated in this study. They were selected from out-clinic of Faculty of Physical Therapy, Cairo University. Their ages were ranged from 55 to 65 years old. Women were assigned according to their BMI into three groups; group A consisted of 20 normal weight women (ranged from 21 to 25 Kg/ m2), group B consisted of 20 overweight women (ranged from 25 to 30 Kg/ m2) and group C consisted of 20 obese women (BMI more than 30 Kg/ m2). Postural balance was assessed by using biodex balance system. Results showed that there is a strong positive significant correlation between BMI and stability indices [APSI (r = 0.82), MLSI (r = 0.85), and overall stability index (r = -0.87)]. As high stability index indicates great platform displacement and less postural stability, we can conclude that there is strong inverse correlation between body mass index and postural balance
