Abstract

The aim of the study was to answer a question of whether low intensity laser therapy could have an effect on orthodontic mini-implants stability. Thirty orthodontic mini-implants were inserted bilaterally in the maxillary arches of fifteen adult subjects who required therapeutic extraction of maxillary first premolars. Mini-implants were immediately loaded with force of 150g then were randomly assigned into two groups using split-mouth design as laser treated sides and control sides. The laser sides were exposed to low - intensity laser therapy from diode laser with a wavelength of 940 nm on (0, 7, 14, 21 days) after mini-implants placement. Mini - implants stability were measured with resonance frequency analysis on (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10 weeks) after its placement. Data was gathered and statistical analysis was performed. Clinically both groups had the same success rate which approximately 78.5 %. But after the 3rd week, mini-implants of the control sides showed statistically significant higher mean % decrease in resonance frequency values than Laser sides (P < 0.05). The stability of mini-implants showed significant decrease from 1st week to 3rd week (P < 0.05). It seems that low intensity laser therapy could enhance mini- implants’ stability especially during the postulated critical period of mini - implant healing stage, but couldn’t prevent its failure. The 2nd and 3rd weeks is a critical period in the healing stage of the mini - implants
