Abstract

Moringa oleifera grown in the laboratory and greenhouse was studied
under drought stress induced by different concentrations of PEG 6000 to
investigate the plant. The main goal of this study was to investigate the adverse
effects of drought stress on Vegetative growth, phytochemical compounds, and
some enzymatic activities of M. oleifera. The metabolic activity of the plant
gives the plant its edible and medical importance. Using PEG as a chemical
treatment was investigated. In the laboratory, different concentrations of PEG
were used (0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30%) in the first experiment but in the second
experiment, different concentrations of PEG were used (0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30,
35, 40 %) and in the greenhouse were done with (0, 5, 15, 25, 35, 45 %) PEG.
The results revealed that the seed germination percentage was enhanced at low
PEG concentration but it was decreased at high concentrations of PEG.
Measurements of growth criteria of the growing M. oleifera under the chosen
PEG levels in green house showed remarkable variation in growth response to
stress at the vegetative growth stage of the plant. Measurements of metabolic
profile in the plant such as phytochemical compounds, and some enzymatic
activities varied significantly by PEG stress. Significant differences were
detected in qualitative and quantitative analysis of some phenolic and flavonoid
compounds by HPLC technique. The study suggested growing the plant in dry
soil where drought stress exists and most crops are not produced economically.
