Abstract

Background:The initiation, progression, and severity of knee osteoarthritis (OA) are associated with decreased muscular strength and alterations in joint mechanics. Resistance exercises are effective in decreasing pain, restoring muscle strength and joint mechanics while improving physical function in patients with knee OA. Purpose: To compare the effects of low load resistance training with blood flow restriction versus neuromuscular training on quadriceps muscle strength, knee joint function and proprioception accuracy in patients with knee OA.Methods: 63 patients of both genders with mild to moderate kneeOA with age range from 45 to 60 years were randomly assigned into 3 groups with 21 subjects in each. group (I)(control group) received traditional high load resistance training exercises including stretching and strengthening of the lower limb muscles 3 sessions per week for 4 weeks, group (II) received the same exercises as in group I but with some variations which are: the resistance exercises included was performed with low load resistance and blood flow restriction was added during exercise 3 sessions per week for 4 weeks and group (III) received neuromuscular training exercises which consists of 5 different exercises. Hand Held Dynamometer was used to assess quadriceps muscle strength, WOMAC questionnaire was used to assess knee joint function and the digital inclinometer was used to assess proprioception accuracyResults: study results revealed significant improvement (P<0.05) in quadriceps muscle strength, knee joint function and knee joint proprioception in the 3 groups.Conclusion:study results confirmed the effective role of the 3 forms of exercises on improving quadriceps muscle strength, knee joint function and knee joint proprioception in patients with knee OA
