Abstract

Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a
serious side effect deriving from neurotoxic chemotherapeutic agents.
The underlying nerve injury can affect proprioception and the feet
sensitivity causing impaired postural control. Sensory re-education is a
therapeutic rehabilitation program that uses repeated sensory stimulation
to recover functional sensibility in the affected area and learn adaptive
functioning. Purpose of the study: To investigate the effect of sensory
re-education program on postural stability, feet sensitivity, pain, and
symptoms severity of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy
patient. Material and methods: Thirty female patients were diagnosed
as CIPN were enrolled. Patients were randomly assigned into two equal
groups. Control group (A): Received the selected physical therapy
program. Study group (B): Received sensory re-education paradigm
combined with the selected physical therapy program. Patients in both
groups received 18 sessions over six weeks, three sessions per week. Thepostural stability was assessed by Biodex Balance System, pain intensity
level was assessed by a visual analogue scale (VAS), the feet sensitivity
was assessed by semmes-weinstein monofilament (SWM), and
symptoms severity was measured by total neuropathy score clinical
version (TNSc). Results: There were a significant improvement in the
the feet sensitivity, postural stability parameters, pain intensity and
symptoms severity in both groups with favor of the study group.
Conclusion: Added sensory re-education paradigm to the selected
physical therapy program in rehabilitation of CIPN is very beneficial
