Abstract

The Mediterranean Sea has a great geological significance and is considered a vast extensive promising basin for hydrocarbon exploration. Herodotus and Levantine basins are the main basins in the east Mediterranean Sea, which show the same evolution stages and accommodate the same type of sediments. The recent geophysical and petrophysical studies proved that Herodotus and Levantine basins are promising for hydrocarbon exploration with possible great reserves. Recent discoveries and increased exploration in the form of seismic acquisition and offshore drilling made the Eastern Mediterranean a hot area for hydrocarbon exploration, especially after the discovery of Zohr field offshore Egypt in 2015.
