This study aims to shed light on the American policy towards Brazil in the period (1964-1985 AD), when the beginning of this period in 1964 witnessed a military coup against President Goulart, and the United States played an important role in this coup; where she secretly contributed to the overthrow of Goulart for his adoption of the communist doctrine and his rejection of Brazil’s subordination to the United States of America. With this coup, Brazil fell under the era of military rule. The end of this period in 1985 AD, the end of the military rule in Brazil, which extended for twenty-one years in Brazil.
This study dealt with situations in Brazil during the political, economic and social era of military rule, where the beginning of this era witnessed repression and absolute dictatorship, and opponents in the government were arrested, arrested, and tortured. The military government also issued institutional laws in order to legitimize its repressive actions, the most important of which are The second founding law: which abolished the political parties that were bleak in Brazil and limited political parties to only two: the pro-government National Alliance for Renewal party, the Brazilian Democratic Movement opposed to the government, and the most repressive Institutional Law Fifth, according to which the President of the Republic gave the power to deprive citizens of their political rights For ten years, censorship was imposed on newspapers and the media, and the era of President Medici, known as the Years of Lead, witnessed the most severe repression and torture in Brazil, through the repressive apparatus and censorship of newspapers and media, and the Brazilian government tried not to show its style. The oppressive regime in the media, and used the media to sing the glories of the military government, and the song became ”Pra Frente Brasil” (”Forward Brazil”), the main song of the government and was played on all official occasions, but during the era of President Geisel, Geisel sought to relieve political pressure, and President Figueiredo ended this task in 1979. Brazil also witnessed during the military era a period of economic miracle during an era President Medici, the Brazilian economy rose.
The US-Brazilian relations during the period of military rule in Brazil did not proceed at the same pace. where the era of President Castelo Branco represented the height of rapprochement in US-Brazilian relations, and the era of President Geisel represented the height of tension in the relations between the two countries.
This study consisted of five chapters, in the forefront of which came an introductory chapter dealing with the roots of the American-Brazilian relations before 1964, while the first chapter dealt with the military coup that overthrew Goulart in 1964, and the role of the United States of America in this coup , while the chapter discussed The second, Brazil, the beginning of the era of military rule in Brazil, deals with Brazil under the administration of President Castelo Branco (1964-1967 AD) and President Costa da Silva (1967-1969 AD), while the third chapter studies Brazil during the period of President Medici’s rule (1969-1974 AD), and deals with the chapter Fourth, Brazil, during the period of President Geisel (1974-1979), President Figueiredo (1979-1985), and the end of military rule in Brazil.
