Abstract

Anumerical simulation for nine cases via using ANSYS-Fluent 19.0 is conducted to assess and enhance the thermal comfort characteristics, within a handball arena that can take up to 2000 people at full occupancy. For modeling the turbulence in the air flow, the k-ω model was used and the simulation mesh consisted of approximately 4.5 million elements. Supply air outlets geometry (square diffusers and jet nozzles outlets)and temperature has been varied in this analysis to evaluate the respective effect on the thermal comfort level within the arena. The results indicate the effect of the distribution of the supply air outlets on the air temperature at the center and the people seats area regarding to velocity. In cases where air jet nozzles have been utilized resulted in more uniform temperature and velocity within the arena. Furthermore, the utilization of supply square diffusers and jet nozzle combination together with the distribution of returned air outlets configuration on opposite sides indicate a progress in thermal comfort achievement and enhancement the velocity distribution in the stadium.The calculated PMV and PPD values considered for 20 points show thermal comfort distribution in the arena. Although, 70% and 80% of the selected points located in comfortable range achieved in studied cases.
