Abstract

It’s interesting to note that the removal of polyps is linked to a 60% DROP in fatalities.Aim of the study: to evaluate the effect of educational guidelines on nurses‘ performance for patients undergoing colonoscopy.Study design: is Quasi- experimental. Setting: The study conducted in Tanta International Teaching Hospital (T.I.T.H) and Internal Medicine Hospital (I.M.H) at the endoscopy unit. Subjects: The sample included all nurses (33nurses) who are working in the previously mentioned settings (22 nurses from I.M.H and 11nurse from T.I.T.H) . Tools: Two tools were enrolled in the study for data collection: Tool (I)”Structured Interview Schedule”, Tool (II) : ”Nurses’ Observational Checklist”. Results: shows that half and more than half (50 % and 54.5%)of the studied nurses in I.M.H and T.I.T.H had moderate level of knowledge pre , compared to the majority (86.4% and 100%)in I.M.H and (100%)in T.I.T.H knowledge level is high immediately and post one-month educational guidelines. Also none of the studied nurses in I.M.H and T.I.T.H group satisfactory at practice pre educational guidelines compared to the majority (90.9% and 77.3%) at I.M.H and the majority (100%, 81.8 %) at T.I.T.H had satisfactory immediately and one-month post educational guidelines. Conclusion: The guidelines improved the knowledge and practice of the nurses towards patients undergoing colonoscopy with a highly statistically significant difference throughout periods of study as P value 0.001. Recommendation: Designing and implementing a service training program to increase nurses knowledge and practices and reduce difficulties for patients having colonoscopies.
