Abstract Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) considers a common recurring psychological as well as somatic disorder which can affect and decrease the quality of life in women. So, it is important to study PMS from different prospective. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate physical activity level, aerobic capacity and food frequency among a cohort of females with premenstrual syndrome. Subjects: One hundred females that were having premenstrual syndrome enrolled into this study, they were chosen from the outpatient clinic of the Faculty of Physical Therapy, Cairo University. Methods: The premenstrual syndrome scale (PMSS) was used to assess the degree of premenstrual syndrome, a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was applied to evaluate the dietary habits, while aerobic capacity was assessed by a 1 mile submaximal test and the physical activity was evaluated by the international physical activity questionnaire (IPAQ). Results: There was a significant association between PMS severity and specific food consumption as consumption of tubers (p = 0.03). There was also a significant association between PMS severity and consumption of fish and seafood (p = 0.008). There was also a significant association between PMS severity and physical activity (p = 0.002). The assessment of physical activity detected that there were 51 females who have low physical activity, 39 females with moderate physical activity and 10 females with high physical activity. Also there was no significant difference (F= 2.89, P= 0.06) between the mild, moderate and severe PMS and the aerobic capacity. Conclusion: Dietary habits, aerobic capacity and physical activity level have an effect on the PMS severity. |
