Abstract

The present study was carried out to investigate some possible pharmacodynamic effects of cefquinome sulfate and its interaction with L-carnitine in male albino rats. For this experiment 72 male albino rats were randomly divided into 4 groups, each of 18 rats as follows:
Group1: (control group):
Rats were treated with saline (2 ml/kg b.wt.) subcutaneously once daily for 56 successive days.
Group2: (L-carnitine treated group):
Rats were treated with L-carnitine (200 mg/kg b.wt.) subcutaneously once daily for 56 successive days.
Group3: (cefquinome treated group):
Rats were treated with cefquinome sulfate (50 mg/kg b.wt) subcutaneously once daily for 5 successive days.
Group4: (cefquinome +L-carnitine treated group):
Rats were treated with cefquinome sulfate (50 mg/kg b.wt) subcutaneously once daily for 5 successive days concomitantly with L-carnitine (200 mg/kg b.wt.) subcutaneously once daily for 56 successive days.
At 2nd, 4th and 8th week from the beginning of drug administration, 6 rats from each control and treated groups were sacrificed and blood, body organs (liver, kidney, testes, epididymis and accessory sex glands) and epididymal contents were obtained from both treated and control rats.
The obtained results are summarized as follows:
1- Haematological parameters:
Administration of cefquinome sulfate induced a significant reduction in PCV % and a significant increase in W.B.Cs count in male albino rats. Administration of L-carnitine concomitantly with cefquinome sulfate induced a significant increase in PCV % as compared with cefquinome sulfate treated group.
2- Biochemical findings:
Administration of cefquinome sulfate induced a significant increase in ALT, ALP and creatinine levels and a significant reduction in albumin value in male albino rats. It also induced a significant increase in MDA level and a significant decrease in TAC level. Administration of L-carnitine concomitantly with cefquinome sulfate induced a significant improvement in all previous biochemical parameters induced by cefquinome sulfate in male albino rats.
3- Effect on semen characters:
Administration of cefquinome sulfate induced a significant decrease in total sperm count, progressive sperm motility % and a significant increase in total sperm abnormalities % in male albino rats. Administration of L-carnitine concomitantly with cefquinome sulfate induced a significant improvement in all previous changes in semen characters induced by cefquinome sulfate in male albino rats.
4- Histopathological findings:
Administration of cefquinome sulfate induced some lesions in the hepatic and renal tissues. Also, it induced some alterations in the reproductive organs (testes, epididymis and accessory sex glands). Administration of L-carnitine concomitantly with cefquinome sulfate induced an effective minimization of the histopathological lesions in the body organs induced by cefquinome sulfate.
