Abstract

Aim: To evaluate the effect of piroxicam (20mg) compared to placebo on post-endodontic pain
after single-visit endodontic treatment of mandibular molars with non-vital pulp.
Methodology: Seventy patients were included. Following confirming the diagnosis clinically and
radiographically, patients were randomly divided into two groups equally (n=35), piroxicam and
placebo. The preoperative medications were given 1hour before the standard root canal treatment
began. Standard endodontic treatment was performed in a single visit using ProTaper Next
instrument in a crown-down technique and 2.5% sodium hypochlorite for irrigation then obturation
using the modified single cone technique. The pain was assessed using the 11-point the numerical
rating scale (NRS) 6h, 12h, 24h, 48h, 72h and 1w postoperatively. Data were collected and
statistically analyzed significant was set at p > 0.05.
Results: Piroxicam should statistically significantly less postoperative pain level and incidence at 6,
12 and 24 hours and statistically significantly less level of pain on perccession 7 days after
treatment. Patient receiving piroxicam required fewer analgesic tablets than those receiving placebo
at the 6-12 hours interval (p>0.05).
Conclusions: A preoperative single oral dose of piroxicam can be effective in reducing endodontic
postoperative pain within 24 hours after treatment and the number of rescue analgesic tablets taken
by the patient within the 6-12 hours interval compared to placebo in patient with mandibular molars
having a non-vital pulp treated in a single visit.
