Abstract

Iron deficiency anemia is a common type of anemia known by inadequate healthy red blood cells. The objective of this study was determined the effect of quinoa and spirulina mixtures levels on iron deficiency-induced anemia using rats. Five experimental rats groups were fed diets supplemented with quinoa and spirulina mixtures at the levels of 5, 10 and 15% in have way each for 28 days vs. the control rat group fed a basal diet free in iron. At the end of the experiment, rat groups fed different supplemented diets had significant dose-related increases in serum iron; additionally, there were variable dose-dependent increases in hemoglobin, hematocrit, and ferritin levels compared to the positive control group. The healthy status of anemic rats was assessed by estimation of plasma concentration of enzymes activities such as aspartate amino transferase (AST), alanine amino transferase (ALT), Urea, creatinine and different anemia parameters. Results showed an improvement in the above parameters at the level of 15% as mixture followed by 10% for the mixture of bos quinoa and spirulina. So, the investigation suggested that, to increase the iron absorption and bioavailability of other parameters, the incorporation of quinoa and spirulina in daily diets would be an effective food to prevent and treat anemia. However human studied are needed.
Key words: Rats - quinoa – spirulina - iron absorption - anemia.
