Abstract Angiotensin converting enzyme is identified as the key component of the renin-angiotensin system whose main function was to process angiotensin I to angiotensin II and degrades bradykinin. Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic disorders characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. To explore the role of ACE gene polymorphism as a risk factor for type II DM. ACE gene polymorphism was estimated on 40 type II diabetic patients and 20 healthy control subjects, using real time PCR syber green technique. The frequencies of the ACE genotypes II, DD, ID, I allele and D allele did not differ significantly between cases and controls. Albumin/Creatinine ratio showed a statistically significant difference between cases and controls with p < 0.001. Our results revealed that Angiotensin converting enzyme gene polymorphism is not associated with increased risk neither for type II diabetes mellitus nor for diabetic nephropathy in both genotypes and alleles |
