Abstract

A common functional polymorphism involving a C to T switch in the promoter region 516 of ApoB gene has been identified, which was found to induce a significant increase of circulating levels of LDL and ApoB (van ’t Hooft et al., 1999). Because ApoB is a proposed ligand for the HCV putative receptor LDLR, its common functional polymorphism is an attractive candidate for study of genetic association with the HCV infection. To investigate the association between ApoB promoter gene polymorphism and HCV infection in Egyptian patients, and to study whether higher levels of LDL might compete with lipoviral particles(LVP) in the binding to LDLR, thus prevent HCV infection. 50 Egyptian patients with hepatitis C virus infection from Kasr Elaini - tropical medicine department and 50 healthy controls were included in this study. Inclusion criteria: HCV antibody positive. Exclusion criteria: Subjects tested positive for hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis D virus (HDV), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and other pathogens of liver disease were excluded from the study
