Abstract

Voltage sags are usually associated with power system faults, energizing of large transformers or starting of a large induction motor. Severe voltage sags may cause tripping of equipment which will result in stopping of the process which in turn leads to large financial losses. So, custom power devices are used to suppress or counteract the disturbances. Each of custom power devices has its own benefits and limitations. Dynamic Voltage Restorer (DVR) is clearly considered one of the best economic solutions for its low capital cost with large load size and there is no maintenance cost during operation A real case study of Egyptian industrial plant including a lamp factory as a sensitive load is modeled and simulated using MATLAB/SIMULINK environment to test the effectiveness of using different system topologies of DVR: a battery, shunt and series converters, and finally shunt and series converters with boost converter. Satisfactory performance is achieved using the topology of using shunt and series converters with boost converter which allows the DVR to compensate deep sags for long durations. The financial assessment of using DVR is also investigated
