Abstract Nanostructured materials in a highly dispersed form have found numerous applications in the areas of catalysis and electrocatalysis where advantage is taken of the high surface to volume ratio to increase overall performance, while minimizing costs of often expensive metal and alloy constituents. Sensitivity of electrocatalytic reactions to the catalyst particle size and crystallographic orientation has also been reported for several reactions with relevance to fuel cell applications. Although efforts have been made to find less expensive materials especially for CO tolerant and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalyst, including metal porphyrins and other macrocycles containing mostly iron or cobalt centers however their long term stability is far below that required for technical applications |
