Abstract

The performance of RC frames in resisting progressive collapse is experimentally and numerically investigated in this research.  The experimental program is conducted to study the effect of concrete compressive strength, reinforcement properties and seismic detailing on the resistance of RC frames to progressive collapse. Moreover, reinforcement debonding, as a measure to prevent the sudden rupture of reinforcing steel bars, is proposed in locations of high stress and experimentally investigated. Detailed finite element models are developed and validated for the tested specimens using the program of LS-DYNA. Nonlinear static analysis is performed on three-dimensional frame structures using SAP2000 to study the effect of reinforcement details on the overall structural response to progressive collapse loads. A numerical parametric study is conducted to study the upgrading of RC frames designed for gravity load to enhance their resistance to progressive collapse. Research conclusions are discussed and significant design parameters and provisions in resisting progressive collapse are presented
