Abstract

Background: Female pattern hair loss (FPHL) is the most common form of hair loss in women; nevertheless our understanding of its etiology remains incomplete. Currently the only FDA approved drug is topical minoxidil. New therapies continue to be sought among which low-level light therapy (LLLT) has gained much ground over the past years. Aim of work: The current randomized controlled clinical trial aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of LLLT in the treatment of FPHL in comparison to the standard topical minoxidil 5% and to a combination of both. Results: The efficacy and safety of both topical minoxidil and LLLT were highlighted in the current study with comparable results in all parameters. The combination group occupied the top position of assessment parameters, with 90% of cases showing improvement, 100% of the patients reported satisfaction, a significant difference regarding Ludwig classification was only documented in this group and UBM findings showed significant increase in the number of hair follicles after both 2 and 4 months. Dermoscopy provided confirmation of the previously reported results.
