Abstract

The aim of this study: is to compare the effect of the mode of delivery on the neonatal outcome in premature vertex singleton newborns, to choose the safest method of delivery and to prevent, whenever possible, preterm labour to reduce the number of preterm births and improve the outcome for mother and baby. Patients and methods: All 137 singleton vertex preterm neonates delivered in Almounira General Hospital during the period from January 1st, 2013 to December 31th, 2013 were included and they were classified into two groups according to the mode of delivery. Results: No significant statistical differences as regards neonatal outcomes: including Apgar score, need of resuscitation, admission to the NICU and the duration of stay were found between the two groups. Among the neonatal morbidities, there were also no significant statistical differences between babies born vaginally (VD) or by Caesarean section (CS) as regards neonatal respiratory distress, intraventricular haemorrhage and NEC. Neonatal sepsis had a higher incidence in the VD group and the neonatal mortality rate showed no significant statistical difference between CS and VD groups. Conclusion: Delivery by CS should not be routinely recommended for preterm babies in the absence of a clear obstetrical indication
