Abstract

The current study aimed to evaluate the effect of progressive muscle relaxation technique on anxiety and sleep quality among hemodialysis patients.
The study sample included 60 adult males and females with CRF admitted the Dialysis Unit at Minia University Hospital for Urology and Nephrology. Also, patients diagnosed with CRF, adult patients and conscious patients were included in the study. While Patients were diagnosed with cognitive impairment, psychiatric disorders or receiving pharmacological or non-pharmacological drugs for anxiety or sleep were excluded from the study.
The main results of the current study:
- The mean age of the studied patients was 48 ± 5.4 years, (76.7 %) of them were married, (66.7%) of them were males and (73.3%) come from rural areas.
- 98.3% and 95% of the studied patients were suffering from muscle pain and muscle cramp, respectively as well as (60%) of them were undergoing hemodialysis for more than 2 yrs.
- The mean score of total anxiety before implementation of the PMR was 32.3 ± 6.5 which decreased to 21.0 ± 4.2 immediately post implementation of the technique. While the mean score of total anxiety was 24.1 ± 5.3 at the follow up.
- There was an improvement in mean scores of PSQI components with statistically significant differences between pre, posttest and follow up where the P-value was 0.001**
- The mean score of total PSQI before implementation of the training program was 14.3 ± 4.2 which decreased to 7.6 ± 5.0 immediately post implementation of the program. Meanwhile the mean score of total PSQI at the follow up was 8.2 ± 4.7.
- There were statistical significant differences between the total anxiety mean score and age, marital status, educational level as well as residence at the posttest and follow up.
- There were statistical significant differences between the total anxiety mean score of studied patient and history of illness at the pre, posttest and follow up.
- There were statistical significant differences between the total anxiety mean score of studied patients and general weakness at the follow up.
- There were statistical significant differences between the total PSQI mean score and age, marital status as well as educational level at the posttest and follow up.
- There were statistical significant differences between the total PSQI mean score of studied patient and history of disease occurrence at the pre, posttest and follow up.
- There were positive correlation between the global PSQI scores and total anxiety score at the pre, post training program and follow up as r = 0.455, p< 0.001**, r = 0.675, p < 0.001**, r = 0.640, p < 0.001**, respectively.
