Abstract

Body image is a complex subjective construct that can influence one’s self-image through cognitive, emotive, and behavioral means.
Furthermore, it is related to a plethora of psychological disturbances, including depression, Social isolation, anxiety, and low self-esteem.
Body dissatisfaction starts young for women; young girls 4 to 11 years old report dissatisfaction with their bodies, expressing the desire for a thinner body.
Changing times on a global scale have seen a paradigm shift in the perception of ―idealness‖ of body shape and construct of beauty. This has far-reaching impacts on several spheres of life from psychological, physical, as well as sexual health. The influence of attitudes, beliefs, culture, art, geography, and technological advances has been explored with the premise of body image impacting sexual health and functioning.
Women also have more distracting thoughts about their bodies during sex than men, and these thoughts are likely to elicit anxiety from women. Lack of interest in sex and inability to reach orgasm are commonly reported sexual problems.
Two studies of college students have provided evidence for a direct relationship between body satisfaction and sexual experiences Results from both studies indicate that college students who perceived their bodies more negatively describe themselves as less sexually active than do those students with more positive body images.
Examining the psychosocial etiology of disrupted sexual functioning has rarely examined all domains of sexual response, focusing instead on sexual desire or sexual functioning overall.
The aim of the work was to test a serial mediating pathway of sexual self-esteem and sexual communication underlying the relationship between body image and sexual function in middle aged adult women in Menoufia government.
