Abstract

The present study is a one year observational cross section study aimed to detecting changes in platelet function tests in children attending Assiut University Children Hospital and in need of regular iron transfusion, in the period from the 1st of January 2021 up to 31 December 2021. The following laboratory investigations were done: Routine tests Complete blood count (CBC) Advia 1800™ was used for analysis Iron profile Serum ferritin Serum iron: Advia 1800™ was used for analysis Specific investigations Platelet function tests include Adenosine diphosphate (ADP) Ristocetin. CollagenArachnoidThe Platelets aggregation bio data papa 4 was used for analysis The study included 90 pediatric patients; their mean age was 9.8±3.62 and ranged from 6 up to 17 years old. Out of 90 studied cases; 55.6% were males and 44.4% were females. Thalassemia was the most common cause of chronic blood transfusion among the studied cases, 18.9% of our studied cases have a history of bleeding, only 71.1% the studied children receiving iron chelation therapy. Also more than one third of the studied cases were splenectomizedDecreased platelets aggregation was found in the majority of the studied cases, i.e. 64.4%, 71.1%,76.7% and 71.1% of the children showed decreased aggregation with ADP, ristocetin, collagen, and arachnoid, respectively, while 35.6%, 2839%, 23.3% and 28.9% children were found to have normal aggregation with ADP, ristocetin, collagen, and arachnoid, respectively. Cases with joint pain and/or skin discoloration have higher serum ferritin level. Significant positive correlation was observed between platelet aggregation functions (ADP, Ristocetin, Collagen, Arachnoid) and hemoglobin, MCV, MCH, MCHC, and retics, while significant positive correlation was observed between platelet aggregation functions (ADP, Ristocetin, Collagen, Arachnoid) and hematocrit value.
