Abstract

Ovarian cancer represents a source of morbidity and mortality in women in Egypt and worldwide. Ovarian cancer mortalities is higher than expected for its incidence owing to the late diagnosis. The symptoms of ovarian cancer are mostly non specific. The current diagnostic tools, laboratory or radiological, still lack the needed power for detection and diagnosis at early stages and hence new diagnotic tools are needed. Ovarian cancer is subdivided into epithelial ovarian cancer and non epithelial ovarian cancer. Epithelial ovarian cancer is more common.
Tumor-suppressor genes are genes that code for proteins that result in cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. Inactivation of these genes through mutations or through epigenetic modifications (e.g. promoter hypermethylation) all result in sequence of events that ultimatley lead to carcinogensis. PCDH17 is one of these tumor-suppressor genes that have been described in various cancers.
Pyrosequencing is one of the powerful techniques for sequencing short reads of nucleic acids. It is also the gold standard for methylation analysis at specific loci as it allows quantifying absolute methylation levels accurately. It is also more suitable for FFPE tissues. Unlike pyrosequencing, NGS platforms have complex statistical tools and are less suitable for FFPE tissues.
