Abstract

Introduction: The most common adverse events that appear during receiving healthcare are health care associated infections and it has an effect on quality of care, morbidity and mortality. Seven patients in developed countries and ten patients in developing countries acquire an HAI out of every 100 hospitalized patients. Infection control measures involve all activities or actions used to minimize the risk of the spread of infection. Transmission-based precautions are intended to lower the risk of contact, droplet, and airborne transmission and are always used in addition to standard precautions to monitor patients with highly contagious or epidemiologically significant pathogens. Nurses as health care professionals play vital roles in the prevention of infections, clinical management of infected persons, and the application of prevention control measures in health facilities. Transmission-based precautions provide a method to reduce or prevent transmission of infection to patients, staff, and others in the health care environment and thus help to reduce the incidence of HAIs. An assessment of the knowledge, attitude and performance of transmission based precaution by healthcare workers is a prerequisite for initiating and implementing a successful infection prevention and control (IPC) strategy in any health facility. Aim: The study aims to assess nurses’ perception about transmission based precautions in Mahalla Fever Hospital. Method: An analytical cross-sectional study design was utilized to accomplish this study. A convenience sample of two hundred and seventy (270) nurses of both genders; different qualifications; and assigned to give direct care to patients. Tools of data collection: The five tools were used in this study for data collection as the following: Nurses’ socio-demographic and occupational characteristics, knowledge, practice, attitude of nurses toward TBP, and Hospital’s measures for transmission-based precautions. Setting: This study was conducted at Mahalla Fever Hospital affiliated with the Ministry of Health and Population. The hospital is located in Gharbia Governorate. Results: The mean age of nurses was 31.967(7.342) years Related to attending previous training courses about infection prevention and control and transmission-based precautions, 72.0% and 92.0 of nurses had participated from one to less than three courses, respectively. Poor total knowledge levels score regarding transmission-based precautions among 56.8% of nurses. Incompetent total performance levels score among 95.5% of nurses regarding transmission-based precautions. Total positive attitude toward transmission-based precautions among 58.4% of nurses. Conclusion& Recommendations: More than half of nurses have a poor total score level of knowledge, and positive attitude regarding transmission-based precautions, while, most of them have incompetent performance. So, the researcher recommended conducting on-duty training programs for nurses on transmission-based precautions and striating on monitoring and coaching nurses’ performance of transmission-based precautions by the infection control team.
