Abstract

One of the most common medical conditions that affect infants and children is epilepsy. Epileptic treatment goal is long term symptom control, and prevent further seizures. Antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) therapy is considered the primary treatment of epilepsy.
One of the important problems that occur in epileptic children are the memory impairment. Many neurocognitive deficit occur in epileptic children including problem solving, executive function, language, perception, concept formation, learning and memory.
This is a case control cross-sectional study, conducted in Ain Shams University hospitals, in which 50 child and adolescent epileptic patients were recruited. We assessed IQ and visual memory using Benton visual retention test and asses multiple factor that may contribute on them.
Conclusions: Benton scale is a appropriate assessment scale that indicate memory dysfunction. This study allowed us to detect the incidence of visual memory impairment among our pediatric patients and it also predicts the influencing factors.
So, it is advised to Strict choice of AEDs and single AEDs is recommended with slow titration, Early assessment of memory and IQ in epileptic children will lead to early intervention and rehabilitation that will affect quality of life in children, Parents and gardeners should strictly follow up children for seizure and sought medical advice for early control of seizures.
