Abstract It appears that capnoqrapnic monitoring provides a reasonable estimate of arterial CO2 tension during weaning in patients without parenchymal lung disease. In patients with parenchymal lung disease, changes in PETC02 correlate significantly with changes in Paco2 , but false negative tests occur in patients with emphysema . If capnographic monitoring is to be used in these patients, a full understanding of the limitations of the technique is required. Particular care must be taken with emphysema patients, in whom false negative results might fail to identify patients with significant hypoventilation. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the use of capnography in weaning chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients from mechanical ventilation admitted at Critical care department, Benha university hospitals. The study was conducted upon 50 consecutive mechanically ventilated patients (36 males &14 females) presented to Critical care department, Benha university hospitals with amean age of 57.90± 9.14 during the period of 14 months starting from Mars 2022 to April 2023., included 50 patients who fulfilled the selection criteria.
