Abstract

background: Head nurses who adopt servant leadership positively affect their staff nurses’ commitment which creates a positive work environment. Aim of study: Identify the effect of servant leadership training program for head nurses on their staff nurses’ commitment. Design: A quasi experimental research design was used to carry out this study. Setting: The research was carried out at inpatient units of medical and surgical departments at Benha University Hospital. Subjects: All head nurses (40) and 200 staff nurses. Tools for data collection: Four tools were used for data collection namely; Servant Leadership Knowledge Questionnaire, Servant Leadership Observational Check List, Servant Leadership Behavior Scale, Supervisor - Related Commitment Scale. The results showed: 77.5%, 42.5% of head nurses had satisfactory level of servant leadership knowledge at post and follow up program respectively compared with preprogram 7.5%. Also 72.5% of head nurses had high level of servant leadership skills at post program and 80% 0f them had moderate level of servant leadership skills compared with preprogram 0.0%. As well as 55%, 92.5% of head nurses had positive servant leadership behavior at post and follow up program than preprogram 7.5%. Also 70%, 67.5% of staff nurses had high commitment level at post and follow up program compared with preprogram 0.5%. Conclusion: There was statistically significant improvement of head nurses knowledge, skills and behavior regarding servant leadership post, follow up program phase compared with preprogram phase. As well as level of staff nurses’ commitment to their supervisors as more than two thirds of head nurses had high commitment level at post and follow up program phase respectively compared to preprogram phase. The study recommended: In-service training and education programs are needed for head nurses periodically to gain servant leadership traits which reflected positively on staff nurses commitment and create a positive work environment.
