Abstract

Bloodstream infections (BSIs) are one of the most lethal infections, having an estimated overall crude mortality of 15% to 30% every year worldwide.
Emergence of resistance to multiple antimicrobial agents in pathogenic bacteria has become a significant public health threat as there are fewer, or even sometimes no effective Antimicrobial agents available for infections caused by these bacteria.
In recent years there has been a remarkable change in the epidemiology of infections due to the spread of MDROs, both in hospitals and in the community, which could lead to lower appropriate empirical antibiotic treatment rates especially in low and middle income countries (e.g. Egypt) due to misuse of antimicrobials and lack of local antibiotic guidelines.
This study was conducted studied over 276 adult Egyptian patients admitted at ICUs in Ain Shams University Hospital from December 1st 2022 till May 30th 2023. Average age of the studied population was 49.7 years, male to female ratio 1:1.1
All patients had evidence of BSI by positive bacterial growth on blood culture and meeting the criteria of sepsis according to SOFA score with exclusion of Growth of Candida species or any other fungal infection.
