Abstract

This research shows the cultural dimensions in the English-Arabic translation of cultural references in Leila Abu El-Ela’s two novels, i.e. The Translator (1999), translated into Arabic by Elkhatim Adl’an, Minaret (2005), translated into Arabic by Badreldin Hashimi . To reach this objective, the research adopts ‘the socio-cultural model’ in translation in light of David Katan’s theory. This model deals with translation as “a means of cultural communication” (Neubert & Shreve, 1992, p. 25). This research’s originality sheds light on the idea that though these two novels cultural references, which have not been tackled in the translation, methods of communicating cultural differences between English and Arabic will be suggested. The main hypothesis running throughout the research is that the translation of these two novels should be expanded to include both the linguistic dimensions of the text as well as the cultural context. This research falls into an introduction, a theoretical background, socio-cultural analysis and samples of analysis. The keywords of the research are “cultural references”, “translating culture”, “Leila Abu El-Ela”, “functional equivalent” and “thick translation.”
