Abstract

The objective of the present study is to construct a cheap and new design of small-scalesolar parabolic dish desalination system made from reused local recyclable materials without complex parts and power source with advantageous approach due to its unique configuration. The present study was carried out in Agricultural Engineering Department, Fac. of Agriculture, Zagazig University, Sharkia Governorate, Egypt (Latitude 30˚ 35/ N, Longitude 31o 31/E) during the summer months through a period from August 2020 to October 2020.ThedesaltingsystemincludinganewdesignofcleanableHDV (Hot Distilled Vessel)actsasaboilerthataccommodate inside a glass box to minimize the heat losses by the wind. The proposedsystemwasinvestigatedbyexperimentsandnumericalmodel in one case only when using glass as a reflection material and EWBC(External water bath coiled-condenser). The experimental data were collected from using different levels of salt concentrations, brine masses, two different reflection materials (Glass and AL foil) and two external condensers. The experimental results were compared to those numerical to validate themodel. The obtained dailyaverage values of radiative heat transfer coefficient proved the effective role of the glass boxandHDV in reducing the heat losses to surroundings. inally, the obtained results of experiments of the solar parabolic dish desalination systemit could be concluded that:- Using external triangular prism with an inverted cone base condenser(ETPICB) condenser was better than EWBC under using glass material according to accumulated productivity. Using EWBC condenser was better than ETPICB under using AL foil material according to accumulated productivity. Using EWBC condenser under using glass material was better than EWBC under using AL foil material according to accumulated productivity. The best results of accumulated distillate water productivity, and daily productivity efficiency were found to be 530 ml/m2 using the brine mass of 0.75 kg and salt concentration of 45g/kg and 89 % using the brine mass of 0.5 kg and salt concentration of 15g/kg by using ETPICB condenser and glass reflection material. The cost of freshwater production from the proposed system was 0.74 $/l for the first system(EWBC condenser) and 0.34$/l for the second system (ETPICB condenser).
