Abstract

Success of the hospital depends on a trustworthy, honest, loyal, and great managers and co-workers. Leadership in any organization, at any level, and the success or failure of any organization depends upon the quality of its leadership, in particular, of the top management team. In this game, at a time when the world is a global village, the companies are considered to be competing on the basis of the human resource capabilities. The concept of leadership, it is not a new concept in the field of social research. In the past few years, the field of leadership has been extensively studied, more than any other area of human resource management (Jain & Luhar, 2021).
Nurses are responsible for guiding the community because of their responsibilities in health care. Patient care decisions and education, effective communication, and clinical management are the most important tasks. These tasks are closely related to leadership behavior. Nurses who exhibit leadership behavior will be pioneers in bringing the profession to a professional level. The goal of future health care institutions should be to influence the quality of patient care through a good nursing autonomous decisions regarding patient care (Bramley, et al., 2020).
The study aimed to assess the effect of leadership styles training program on nurses’ autonomous decision making through: assessing head nurses’ knowledge regarding leadership styles through the program: assessing head nurses’ attitude regarding leadership styles through the program, assessing head nurses’ skills regarding leadership styles through the program, assessing the autonomous decision making among nurses through the program, design and implement educational program for head nurses about leadership styles and evaluating the effect of program on leadership styles and its effect on nurses’ Autonomous Decision Making through the program.
Research Hypotheses
There was an improvement of head nurses’ knowledge, attitude and skills regarding leadership styles after implementing the program and it will improve nurses’ Autonomous Decision Making.
• Research design:
A quasi-experimental research design with pretest and post test and follow up test assessment was used in carrying out this study.
• Setting:
The current study was conducted at critical care units at Ain Shams Specialized hospital affiliated to Ain Shams University. This hospital provides inpatient and outpatient services to all categories of community. The hospital’s capacity is 800 beds distributed into four buildings: A, B, C and D. Each building consists of 3 floors and underground floor.
• Subjects:
The study subjects consisted of two groups:
 The first group: This group included 46 head nurses who are working in the abovementioned study settings.
 The second group: This group included 94 stuff nurses who are working in the abovementioned study setting having at least one year of job experience and who are working full time.
• Tools of data collection
Four tools were used to collected data for this study:
[1] Leadership styles knowledge questionnaire:
It included two parts:
- Part I: Personal data were collected for head nurses characteristics as gender, education, age, years of experience in nursing, years of experience in management.
- Part II: Leadership styles knowledge questionnaire:
It was developed by the researcher based on reviewing related literature as Borychi et al. (2014); Haciaglu and Dincer (2014) to assess head nurses knowledge about leadership styles at work. It consisted of (110 true or false questions) and (12 multiple choices questions). All questions were divided into four dimensions as difference between leadership style and management, importance of leadership styles situational factors of effective leadership, factors affecting leadership styles.
• Scoring system:
The questions were scored as (1) for correct answer and (zero) for incorrect answer.
• Satisfactory ≥ 60% of total knowledge score.
• Unsatisfactory < 60% of total knowledge score.
