Abstract

In this study an eco-friendly, and facile process for the synthesis of a cobalt-biochar nanocomposite (Co@BC) using rice straw biomass is reported for the first time. A two superhydrophobic coatings were well constructed on steel substrates using potentiostatic electrodeposition of nickel modified biochar, Ni@BC, and nickel modified by cobalt-biochar nanocomposite, Ni-Co@BC, coatings followed by soaking in an ethanolic solution of stearic acid. The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, FTIR, demonstrated that the stearic acidgrafted Ni@BC coating, Ni-Co@BC@SA, and the stearic acid-grafted Ni-Co@BC composite, Ni-Co@BC@SA, were successfully deposited on the steel substrate. The results of the scanning electron microscope revealed that the created superhydrophobic coatings have nanoscale features. The atomic force microscopy results show that the Ni-Co@BC@SA has higher roughness than Ni@BC@SA so Ni-Co@BC@SA coat will have higher superhydrophobicity.
