Abstract

Obesity has become one of the leading causes of disability and death, affecting adults, children and adolescents and became a significant burden on the healthcare system in Egypt.
Several strategies have been suggested to improve patients’ adherence to weight loss programs (WLPs). Tailoring dietary and physical activity interventions according to a person’s preference has been reported to be one of the strategies that can impact the adherence of patients to lifestyle modifications required for the management of obesity.
In clinical practice, understanding patients’ preferences can guide nutritionists to better understand factors that can affect their patients’ compliance and adherence to WLPs and help them develop strategies to improve such adherence. However, little is known about the preferences of obese and overweight patients for different WLPs in Egypt. To our knowledge, this is the first study conducted in Egypt to address the preferences of obese and overweight patients for different WLPs using the discrete choice experiment. The aim of this study is to determine the individuals’ preferences for different diet and physical activity programs amongst patients attending for weight loss in a university nutrition clinic in Alexandria.
6.1.2. Methods
Study design: A cross-sectional survey was conducted during which the choice-based tasks were presented to the participants.
Setting: Nutrition clinic of the High Institute of Public Health, Alexandria University.
Population: Overweight and obese patients who were seeking weight loss at the nutrition clinic of the High Institute of Public Health, Alexandria University and met our inclusion criteria.
Sample size: 125 respondents.
Survey: It consisted of three parts:
1. A practical example for one task.
2. A sociodemographic survey that collected data about the participant’s age, sex, marital status, occupation, monthly income, education, sociodemographic characteristics, weight, height, presence of comorbidity, and duration of adherence to lifestyle modifications (if previously followed).
3. A discrete choice experiment (Appendix VII) which is a choice-based questionnaire consisting of eight tasks consisting of two alternatives from which each participant has to choose only one alternative per task, or choose neither of them. The experimental design of the choice tasks was constructed using Conjoint.ly.
Statistical Analyses: performed using IBM SPSS® software version 22. and consisted of three parts:
1. Analysis of participants’ characteristics.
2. Analysis of the discrete choice experiment that included estimating the preference weights of the attributes’ levels, relative importance of the attributes, and participants’ WTP for different attributes’ levels.
3. Subgroup analyses by gender, status of comorbidities, reasons to lose weight, history of following previous WLPs, and BMI.
