Abstract This work was carried out to study the effectiveness of noninvasive positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV) compared to conventional oxygen therapy after planned extubation on the rate of reintubation as well as weaning outcome in patients with hypercapnic respiratory insufficiency. For this purpose 100 invasively mechanically ventilated patients with hypercapnic respiratory failure who were admitted to (RICU) of Chest Department, Zagazig University Hospitals were enrolled in the study. They were classified into two groups after extubation, where they were cross matched together as regards age, sex, cause of admission, presence or absence of comorbid conditions and previous MV. group I: (patients who received NIPPV): They were 50 patients; (35males and 15 females) with a mean age of 58.4 ± 8.9years. group II: (patients who received conventional oxygen therapy): They were 50 patients (34 males and 16 females) with a mean age of 56.3 ± 10.0 years. |
