Abstract

E. coli is a prevalent opportunistic nosocomial pathogen. E. coli has variable weapons to fight the host defense and cause the disease. Unfortunately, the available antibiotics cannot withstand the development of E. coli resistance. Also, the misuse of the available antibiotics enhances the E. coli pathogenicity and resistance. Consequently, there is a pressing need to explore novel alternative strategies, including targeting the virulence factors.
In the present study, 50 E. coli isolates were obtained from specimens collected from patients who were admitted to Suez Canal University Specialized Hospital and were identified by conventional methods. The distribution of isolates was as follows: 45.45% from urine, 14.29% from stool, and 29.03% from blood specimens. All the isolates were subjected to AST by the disc diffusion method. E. coli isolates showed the higher sensitivity to MRP with a percentage of 92%. Following MRP, AK was observed to have a susceptibility rate of 90%. On the other hand, the highest level of resistance was observed against AMC displaying a 100% resistance rate. Following AMC, CTX was observed to have a resistance rate of 44%. In addition, 66% of the E. coli isolates in this study were MDR.
