Abstract

Worldwide, the building sector is responsible for consuming more than 36% of the final global energy. Accordingly, sustainable retrofit is an important method to achieve energy reduction and sustainable development. And in motion of the global movement, Retrofitting existing buildings for energy efficiency has been identified as an effective measure to reduce global energy consumptions. Many governments and organizations have put significant effort towards energy efficiency improvement in existing buildings. In that, the Green retrofit is the sustainable refurbishment of an existing building to make it more efficient also better for the environment and sustainable for the future. Building Information Modeling (BIM) can offer a comprehensive and integrated platform for construction projects, as has been demonstrated in many large-scale projects, mostly in new buildings but sometimes also in retrofit projects. In motion of the initiative undertaken by the state to evacuate the old capital’s buildings and move them to the new administrative capital, and according to the renovations provided by the government, a change will occur to the uses of the old buildings, in this perspective; we must retrofit the existing buildings in a sustainable way to achieve optimal use. The main aim of the research is developing criteria for sustainable retrofitting of the public buildings in Egypt which had been moved to the new administrative capital and establish framework for the integration of building information modeling with the sustainable retrofitting of the evacuated public buildings in Egypt, which enables informed decisions in retrofitting schemes. Therefore, the objectives of this research are identifying the benefits and barriers of sustainable retrofitting of public buildings, investigating the impact of using (BIM) on sustainable retrofitting of public buildings, investigating the challenges in sustainable retrofitting for the evacuated public buildings in Egypt’s old capital and how BIM will decrease those challenges, Setting conceptual plan by applying (BIM) processes on a case study for sustainable retrofitting of public building in Egypt, and Answering the research question about identifying the Critical Success Factors in design process for successful integration of building information modeling in sustainable retrofitting of public buildings in Egypt. To attend these objectives, the research relied on three main approaches. The first on is a Theoretical Approach through Data collection and data analysis through literature review, questionnaire and interviews with contractors consultant and owner in order to validate the criteria developed. The second is Analytical Approach by Analysis of qualitative data have been highlighted and examined through literature reviews of relevant case studies and questionnaire. Finally, Deductive Approach to link the results coming from previous approaches together and got into final framework for the integration of BIM in sustainable retrofitting buildings.
