Abstract

Ceramides are a family of lipid molecules that are found in high concentrations within cell membranes, ceramide has several roles in cardiovascular diseases as in atherosclerosis & myocardial infarction, ceramides predicted short-term and long-term major adverse cardiac events. The plasma ceramides that have been studied as high-risk factors are Cer (d18:1/16:0), Cer (d18:1/18:0) and Cer (d18:1/24:1) and the ratios of these ceramides to Cer (d18:1/24:0) Ceramides level increased in UA patients than those without ACS, this help identifying patients with UA and higher risk of ACS from populations without significant elevation of cardiac troponins, Additionally, NSTEMI patients had higher levels of ceramides than non-ACS patients, suggesting that ceramides may be used to discriminate between individuals with increased troponins caused by ACS versus non-ACS diseases Ceramides level increased in CAD patients this in difference to lipid profile as a large population of hospitalized CAD patients had LDL-C and HDL-C levels within the normal ranges.
